Just because a society holds elections doesn't mean all its members are truly free. Democracies can exclude, oppress, and silence people — through laws, economic structures, or social norms. This short claim pushes us to ask what freedom actually requires beyond the ballot box.

Mbembe developed his theories in the context of African states undergoing formal democratisation while structural violence, inequality, and exclusion persisted. His 2003 essay 'Necropolitics' was published as the US invasion of Iraq demonstrated how democratic rhetoric could coexist with mass death.

Cameroonian philosopher and political theorist whose concept of 'necropolitics' — the power of the state to decide who may live and who must die — has become central to postcolonial and critical theory. He teaches at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg.
