Aisha al-Baunniyya lived through the Ottoman conquest of the Mamluk Sultanate in 1517, which brought Syria under Ottoman rule. Despite these political upheavals, Damascus remained a major centre of Islamic scholarship and Sufi teaching, in which she was a recognised authority.

Syrian Sufi poet and scholar born around 1456 in Damascus, considered the most prolific female author in pre-modern Arabic literature. Her work combines mystical poetry with scholarly Islamic learning, and she served as a Sufi master in her own right.
