Aidoo made this argument in interviews and essays throughout the 1970s, as debates about feminism and African literature intensified internationally. The decade saw the United Nations Decade for Women begin in 1975, and African feminists were asserting that gender justice was not a Western import but a genuine African necessity.

Ghanaian author, poet, and playwright considered one of the most important voices in African literature. Her 1964 play The Dilemma of a Ghost was one of the first works by an African woman staged in sub-Saharan Africa, and she served as Ghana's Minister of Education from 1982 to 1983.
