Anna Comnena opens her history not with triumphalism but with humility: even the greatest achievements will be swept away. This is why history matters: it is the only way of holding onto what time would otherwise erase.

Anna Komnene wrote the Alexiad in a Constantinople increasingly threatened by Turkish expansion and the chaotic aftermath of the First Crusade. She wrote in exile after a failed attempt to take the throne, and her historical project was partly a way of preserving her father's legacy against the forgetting that political displacement threatened.

Byzantine princess and historian born in 1083, the eldest daughter of Emperor Alexios I. Her Alexiad, completed around 1148, is a detailed account of her father's reign and the First Crusade. It is the only major medieval historical work written by a woman and remains a foundational text of Byzantine studies.
