Historical Context
Arenas was imprisoned in Cuba's El Morro castle in the early 1970s for 'ideological deviation' and homosexuality. The Cuban Revolution had established internment camps for gay men and political dissidents. Arenas continued writing despite imprisonment, smuggling manuscripts out of the country at enormous personal risk.
