Freedom is not simply the absence of physical restriction. Someone who chooses truth and resistance from inside a prison cell can be more internally free than someone outside who has traded their honesty for safety and comfort. True freedom is a state of being, not a location.

Arenas was imprisoned in Cuba's El Morro castle in the early 1970s for 'ideological deviation' and homosexuality. The Cuban Revolution had established internment camps for gay men and political dissidents. Arenas continued writing despite imprisonment, smuggling manuscripts out of the country at enormous personal risk.

Cuban novelist and poet who was imprisoned by the Castro regime for his homosexuality and dissident writing before escaping to the United States in 1980. His memoir Before Night Falls, published posthumously in 1992, is a foundational work of Latin American queer literature.
