Systems of power do not teach you how to dismantle them. If you're waiting for the institutions that benefit from your oppression to hand you the tools of your liberation, you'll wait forever. Real education for freedom has to be sought out, built, and shared outside those systems.

Shakur published her autobiography in 1987 from exile in Cuba, at a time when the United States was engaged in a domestic crackdown on Black radical organizations and the Cold War was nearing its end. Her book offered a first-person account of racism, state violence, and the search for self-determination that became essential reading in activist circles.

American activist and former member of the Black Liberation Army who was convicted of murdering a New Jersey state trooper in 1973 in a trial widely contested as unjust. She escaped from prison in 1979 and has lived in political asylum in Cuba since 1984. Her 1987 autobiography remains a foundational text in Black radical tradition.
