Belli published The Inhabited Woman in 1988, shortly after the Sandinista government had survived years of US-backed Contra warfare. Women in Nicaragua had fought alongside men in the revolution and were now confronting the limits of the change they had risked their lives for, as gender equality remained an incomplete revolution within the revolution.

Nicaraguan poet and novelist who was an active participant in the Sandinista revolution that overthrew the Somoza dictatorship in 1979. Her work, including the novel The Inhabited Woman, interweaves erotic sensuality, political commitment, and feminist consciousness in ways that defined a generation of Latin American women's writing.
