Bruno was claiming that space does not have a centre or an edge — it goes on forever in all directions, with no special divine boundary. This was a direct challenge to the theological cosmology of his time and one of the reasons he was burned at the stake.

Bruno published On the Infinite Universe and Worlds in 1584 while living in England under the protection of the French ambassador. His ideas drew on Copernicus but went far beyond him, arguing for an infinite cosmos with multiple suns and inhabited worlds, which the Church considered heretical.

Italian philosopher, mathematician, and former Dominican friar whose ideas about an infinite universe and multiple worlds were centuries ahead of mainstream science. He was burned at the stake by the Roman Inquisition in 1600 for heresy, becoming a martyr for free thought.
