El-Salahi developed his artistic philosophy during Sudan's first decade of independence in the 1960s. Sudanese artists were grappling with how to develop an authentic visual language that was neither colonial-European nor a mere revival of traditional forms. His Khartoum School became influential across African and Arab modernism.
About the Author
Sudanese visual artist considered a pioneer of Sudanese modernism who blended Islamic calligraphy, Sudanese folk traditions, and Western abstract art.
