Martí wrote this in his essay journalism in the early 1890s as Cuba remained under Spanish colonial rule and as Latin American politics churned with strongmen and oligarchs who had simply replaced European colonial rulers with local ones. His observation on tyranny applied to the cycles of oppression he witnessed across the Americas.

Cuban poet, essayist, and independence leader who is considered the apostle of Cuban independence. His writing laid the intellectual foundation for Cuba's 1895 war of independence from Spain, and he died in combat in the same year.
