Duende is Lorca's word for that raw, electric force in art that truly moves people. He argued this power only appears when the artist — and the audience — feels something real is at stake. Comfortable art cannot achieve it. Only art that brushes against darkness can.

Lorca delivered his lecture 'Play and Theory of the Duende' in Buenos Aires in 1933. It was a turbulent period for Spain — the Second Spanish Republic had just been declared, social tensions were escalating, and artists were grappling with what authentic expression could mean in politically charged times.

Spanish poet and playwright from Granada, one of the most celebrated artists of the 20th century and a central figure in the Generation of '27 literary movement. His work drew on Andalusian folk traditions, flamenco, and surrealism. He was killed by Nationalist forces at the start of the Spanish Civil War in 1936.
