Lucretius saw human existence as a continuous effort to understand a world that resists understanding — we stumble forward without ever having full clarity about what is real, what is good, or what awaits us. This is not despair but realism: knowing the darkness makes the search for light more honest.
Quote by Lucretius: “Life is one long struggle in the dark.”

Historical Context
Lucretius wrote De Rerum Natura during the final years of the Roman Republic, a period of bitter civil conflict between Julius Caesar and Pompey. Rome's political chaos gave urgent weight to his philosophical argument that understanding the natural world — not politics or religion — offered the only real peace of mind.
