Maimonides wrote from Cairo in the late 12th century, at a time when Islamic, Jewish, and Christian scholarship were in uneasy dialogue across the Mediterranean. His own family had fled persecution under the Almohad dynasty, and his intellectual work sought to find common ground between revealed religion and Greek philosophy.

Medieval Sephardic Jewish philosopher and physician born in Córdoba in 1138, widely considered the most important Jewish philosopher of the medieval period. His Guide for the Perplexed attempted to reconcile Jewish scripture with Aristotelian philosophy. He served as court physician to the Sultan Saladin in Cairo.
