The first edition of Montaigne's Essais appeared in 1580 as France was convulsed by religious civil war. Montaigne had recently retired from public life to his family estate in Bordeaux, and his writing explored what a good life might look like when political life had collapsed into violence.

French Renaissance philosopher and writer credited with popularising the essay as a literary form. His three-volume Essais, first published in 1580, explored personal experience as a lens for universal human questions with remarkable candour and wit.
