Ocampo founded the journal Sur in 1931, during a period when Argentine cultural life was dominated by men. Her journal, which she funded personally, brought writers including Jorge Luis Borges, Federico García Lorca, and Virginia Woolf into dialogue with Latin American readers, while she herself fought for recognition as a writer in her own right.

Argentine writer, publisher, and intellectual, founder of the influential literary journal Sur, which introduced Latin American readers to European modernism and provided a platform for major writers across the hemisphere.
