This line comes from The Republic, written as Athens was rebuilding its identity after military humiliation. Plato was particularly concerned with education and the formation of character in the young, arguing that what children are exposed to first will determine who they become.

Athenian philosopher who lived 427–348 BCE and founded the Academy, the first institution of higher learning in the Western world. A student of Socrates, he recorded and extended his teacher's dialogues. His works — including The Republic, Phaedo, and Symposium — remain central to Western philosophy.
