Historical Context
Rumi composed his poetry in Konya, in present-day Turkey, during the height of the Mongol conquests that were reshaping the Islamic world. The Seljuk Sultanate of Rum was under enormous pressure, and Rumi's Sufi brotherhood offered a spiritual refuge centred on love rather than war.
