Seneca wrote his Epistulae Morales and philosophical essays during the reign of Emperor Nero, a period of increasing political terror and personal danger for those close to power. He himself was eventually forced to suicide, and his writings took on additional weight given that he was practicing philosophy under a regime capable of arbitrary execution.

Roman Stoic philosopher, statesman, and playwright who served as advisor to Emperor Nero and wrote extensively on ethics, resilience, and the good life in letters and essays including Letters from a Stoic. He was compelled to commit suicide by Nero in 65 CE.
