When you are overwhelmed by a feeling — rage, jealousy, fear — you are controlled by it. But the moment you understand exactly what that emotion is and why it is happening, it loses its grip. Clarity is the cure. This is Spinoza's argument that understanding is a form of freedom.

The Ethics was published immediately after Spinoza's death in 1677, delayed to avoid censorship during his lifetime. The Dutch Republic was at the height of its cultural golden age but also politically volatile, having executed one of Spinoza's mentors, Johan de Witt, in 1672. Spinoza's philosophy of reason as liberation was a direct response to political fanaticism.

Dutch philosopher of Portuguese-Jewish origin whose rationalist philosophy challenged religious orthodoxy and laid foundations for the Enlightenment. His masterwork Ethics, published posthumously in 1677, argued that God and Nature were one and the same substance.
