Neither emotion nor intellect is enough on its own. Feeling deeply without good judgement leads you astray; being clever without genuine care makes you manipulative. Swedenborg argues that real virtue requires both working together — heart and mind in balance.

Swedenborg was writing his theological works in the 1760s, a period when Enlightenment rationalism dominated European intellectual life. His blending of spiritual vision with ordered, quasi-scientific description was an unusual response to the era's scepticism about religious experience.

Swedish scientist, philosopher, and mystic whose later spiritual writings, including Heaven and Hell, had enormous influence on Romanticism and later on figures including William Blake and Balzac. He worked earlier as a respected natural philosopher before devoting himself to theological exploration.
