Historical Context
Thich Nhat Hanh wrote The Miracle of Mindfulness in 1975 as a letter to a fellow monk working with refugee children in war-devastated Vietnam. The Vietnam War had just ended with the fall of Saigon. He had been in exile from Vietnam since 1966 and was building his teaching community in France.
About the Author
Vietnamese Zen Buddhist monk, peace activist, and teacher who founded the Plum Village tradition of engaged Buddhism in France. His more than 100 books on mindfulness, peace, and compassion include The Miracle of Mindfulness, first published in 1975. He was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by Martin Luther King Jr. in 1967.
