Environmental problems cannot be solved by rules alone. People need to understand why nature matters and feel capable of making a difference. Without that knowledge and power, they have no real reason to act — and no tools to do so.

Maathai delivered her Nobel Peace Prize lecture in Oslo in December 2004, the same year she was awarded the prize. The world was experiencing accelerating deforestation and climate anxiety, and her selection marked a historic acknowledgement that peace, justice, and environmental protection are inseparable.
