Grandson of the Prophet Muhammad and son of Ali ibn Abi Talib, born in 626 CE in Medina, whose refusal to pledge allegiance to the Umayyad Caliph Yazid led to his death at the Battle of Karbala in 680. He is the central martyr figure in Shia Islam, and his stand at Karbala is commemorated annually in Ashura.
