Mamluk Sultan of Egypt and Syria who ruled from 1260 to 1277, famous for defeating the Mongols at the Battle of Ain Jalut in 1260 — the first major Mongol defeat — and halting the Crusader presence in the Holy Land. He transformed the Mamluk Sultanate into the dominant power in the region.
