American civil rights and women's rights activist who led the National Council of Negro Women for over forty years and worked alongside Martin Luther King Jr., Medgar Evers, and other figures of the civil rights movement. She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1994 and the Congressional Gold Medal in 2004.
