Hildegard of Bingen

German Benedictine abbess, composer, philosopher, and mystic born in 1098. She composed a significant body of liturgical music, wrote visionary theological works, and produced treatises on natural history and medicine. Declared a Doctor of the Church in 2012, she was one of the most extraordinary figures of 12th-century Europe.
