Libyan novelist whose vast body of work — written in Arabic and translated into over 35 languages — draws on Tuareg mythology and desert spirituality. His 1990 novel The Bleeding of the Stone is considered a masterwork of Arabic literature and explores the sacred relationship between humans, animals, and the Sahara.
