Greek philosopher and mathematician who lived approximately 570–495 BCE, founder of the Pythagorean religious and philosophical movement. He is best known for the theorem bearing his name, though he wrote nothing himself and is known through later sources. He believed mathematics was the fundamental structure underlying all reality.
