17th-century queen of Ndongo and Matamba in present-day Angola, celebrated for her fierce and sustained resistance to Portuguese colonialism and the slave trade. A master diplomat and military strategist, she negotiated directly with European powers while simultaneously leading armed resistance. She ruled for decades and became a symbol of African resistance to colonialism.
