Athenian soldier, historian, and philosopher who lived approximately 430–354 BCE. A student of Socrates, he wrote historical works including Anabasis — an account of a Greek mercenary army's retreat through Persia — as well as philosophical dialogues and a biography of Cyrus the Great, the Cyropaedia.
