This is the philosophy of Ubuntu in a sentence: you are not fully yourself in isolation. Your dignity, your full humanity, depends on recognising and supporting the humanity of others. Cruelty or indifference to another person does not leave you untouched — it diminishes something in you too.

Tutu wrote this in the late 1990s, as South Africa was navigating the transition from apartheid through the Truth and Reconciliation Commission process. The commission was a global experiment in restorative rather than retributive justice, attempting to build a new national identity without erasing the crimes of the past.
