Central Asian polymath born in 973 CE in Khwarezm, in present-day Uzbekistan, who made pioneering contributions to astronomy, mathematics, physics, geography, and comparative religion. His Kitab al-Hind is one of the most detailed and sympathetic accounts of Indian culture written by a medieval scholar.
