Faiz wrote extensively during the early years of Pakistan's independence, a period of intense political hope and disillusionment. He was imprisoned by the Pakistani government in 1951 on charges of conspiracy, and much of his poetry from this era blurs the line between romantic and political devotion.

One of the most celebrated Urdu poets of the twentieth century, born in Sialkot in 1911. His poetry wove together romantic longing and political resistance, earning him the Lenin Peace Prize in 1962 and a Nobel Prize nomination.
