When you write about an experience, a person, or a place, you live it once and then you live it again through the act of writing. Writing deepens the original feeling, giving it a second life — which is why the act of writing is itself an act of love.

Poniatowska was working on Querida Diego, te abraza Quiela in 1978, a novel in letters imagining the voice of the Russian painter Angelina Beloff, who was abandoned by Diego Rivera. Mexico City was a center of Latin American literary and intellectual life, and Poniatowska was one of its most prominent public voices.

Mexican journalist and novelist, winner of the Cervantes Prize in 2013, considered one of the most important voices in Latin American literature and investigative journalism. Her 1971 chronicle La Noche de Tlatelolco documented the 1968 student massacre through survivor testimonies.
