Queen of the Ndongo and Matamba kingdoms in present-day Angola, one of the most formidable military and diplomatic leaders in African history. She resisted Portuguese colonisation for decades, negotiating directly with colonial governors and leading her own armies in battle. She ruled until her death at the age of approximately eighty.
